Meet the team

Olivia Jerram

Founder

Olivia recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in astrophysics and a passion for science communication. During her time at the university, she worked for four years at The Daily Californian, Berkeley’s student-run newspaper of record, including a term as the publication’s managing editor. Upon leaving the Daily Cal, she began writing for the Rothfels Lab on campus, communicating the team’s research on plant phylogenetics to the public. She also worked as a content creator at the Lawrence Hall of Science, writing and editing online educational videos for all ages. Now, she’s founding and producing content for At the Roots.

Ketki Samel

Editor

A recent graduate from UC Berkeley’s integrative biology department, Ketki is passionate about researching the effects of human-mediated change on wildlife communities. She has spent two summers in the Sierra Nevada researching behavioral adaptations to climate change in chipmunks, and has recently begun an independent research project to study the impact of reduced human presence due to COVID-19 on urban bird communities. Ketki is now applying to graduate programs in ecology and evolutionary biology, and volunteering her time to help out at At the Roots as Olivia’s editor and advice-giver.
